“Going to a job every week gives me a sense of belonging” says Paul, a 54 year old Reside tenant from South-East London.
It’s an achievement he has worked hard for. When Paul moved into his tenancy in 2003, he had difficulty managing his mental health and daily tasks and was at serious risk of self-neglect. But care staff at his home provided support and encouragement and now describe Paul as very confident, and much more independent in his daily living.
After gaining more independence skills, Paul went on to attend the Step Forward programme with Mencap and, after a year of training, secured paid employment as a part-time cleaner, which he has successfully sustained for the past two years.
Paul is now looking forward to getting more hours at his cleaning job and, ultimately, moving into his own independent apartment. He says, “Supported living means I get the care I need from the staff, and I feel like my future will be better now.”
